I'm not sure how I feel about this artist.
She is from Japan but moved to the US so her work is a really interesting blend of the Japanese and American contemporary art scenes. Which is really neat, probably one of my favorite things about her. She blends the whole Tokyo pop style with graffiti and street art movements in a very innovative way.
Her work also represents a female perspective in a very masculine part of the art world. How many female graffiti or street artists do you know? And even better she is very intentional about bringing girly elements to her graffiti and wall art. She uses lots of pinks and purples, flowers, hearts and butterflies. But the part that I just don't really get is the porn references. A lot of her figures are in extremely sexual poses. And I'm not sure what she's trying to say with that. With the super sweet color scheme it just seems to play into male fantasies about women, without really challenging that a whole lot. Maybe it's just trying to celebrate women as magical creatures or something, but it just seems like porn to me.
But she seems to be a big deal in the art world, which will make me sad unless I read something explaining that my interpretation is all wrong and that makes me respect her views.
Here is her website.
